Berlin Bound: Weimar-era German jazz from the 1920s: A 4 Week Class with Sam Harmet

Berlin Bound: Weimar-era German jazz from the 1920s
Mondays at 8pm
10/16, 10/23, 10/30, 11/6
The 1920s were an incredibly politically and economically turbulent time in Germany, but also a time of intense creativity. Prior to the Nazi rise to power, Berlin was a hotbed of radical experimentation across the arts. As American jazz washed up on the shores of Germany, these new sounds were quickly put to use in the popular tunes coming out of Berlin's recording studios. In this workshop, we'll dive into this unique repertoire, from the well-known (Kurt Weill, "Mack the Knife") to many other lesser known gems. We'll look at tunes from chordal and melodic viewpoints and also consider improvisational possibilities. Open to students of all instruments with basic instrumental knowledge.
