For singers who have vocal improvisation experience, this workshop will provide a deeper exploration of spontaneous composition, arrangement, conducting, leading and supporting, vocal blend, dynamics, versatility and how to build and deconstruct an arc. I will share the techniques I've adapted from my studies of vocal improv luminary Bobby McFerrin, Brazilian body music composer Fernando Barba and his collective Barbatuques, jazz vocalists Rihannon and Carla Cook, experimental vocalist Meredith Monk, and more. In each session, you will practice vocal improv in the context of whole group singing, small ensembles, duets and solos.
Each week, we will focus on techniques to hone your skills in each specific aspect of the improvisational singing experience. You will also engage with tools for getting "unstuck" and maintaining the flow of your creativity in any improvisational context. Because this class requires prior experience, please email firstname.lastname@example.org before registering so you can make sure the class is right for you.
